Fresh Breath

What causes bad breath (halitosis)?

Bad breath can be caused by bacteria in the teeth, tongue, or gum line. Sometimes plaque or bacteria can get trapped underneath the gums where we can’t clean it on our own, even if we are brushing and flossing as directed. A dry mouth can also lead to more bacteria growing.

Good dental hygiene is still the first step. More frequent dental cleanings are another way bad breath can be prevented. In some cases and if you are also experiencing gum problems, scaling and root planing may be recommended to release trapped bacteria and plaque under the gumline, which can also treat bleeding gums and inflammation at the same time.

Bad breath can be stressful and embarrassing, especially if proper dental hygiene and cleanings are not enough to fix the problem. Luckily, by treating bad breath, you are also treating and preventing gum disease and other oral problems.

At Miracle Dental Center, we can give you a thorough evaluation to determine the cause and effective solutions, including how you can maintain your fresh breath.

You can help maintain fresh breath at home by:

  • Proper brushing and flossing
  • Tongue scraping
  • Using gum or mints when on the go
  • Using antibacterial or hydrating mouthwash
  • Using dental products with odor neutralizers or natural antibacterials such as zinc chloride or eucalyptus
